What is Ukraine?
Ukraine is an East Slavic country bordering Moldova, Romania, the Russian Federation, Belarus, Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary. With a population of over 45 million people, and over 230,000 square miles of territory, Ukraine is one of the Europe's largest countries in both population and size.
Ukraine is the 44th largest country in the world, has a $93 Billion USD GDP, and is one of the most developed countries on the continent.
Isn't it "The Ukraine"?
Today, Ukraine is simply referred to as just that; Ukraine. Ukraine gained its independence on 24 August, 1991, after years of disrespect under the USSR. Under the Soviet regime, Ukraine was Ukraine SSR, or The Ukraine.
Isn't Ukraine just Russia?
No, because it is not Russia. Ukraine has its own language, culture, and geography. Ukrainian and Russian languages share some similarities, but are mostly indistinguishable from another.
If addressed in Russian, a Ukrainian will answer back in Ukrainian, or even just ignore you altogether. Ukrainians are proud of their heritage, freedom, and culture. Ukrainians are not Russian.
